This course introduces the dangers presented to first responders by synthetic opioids, a broad class of substances that are at the heart of the current US drug epidemic. First responders may encounter these substances in all kinds of situations, including emergency incidents on the job. These substances are incredibly potent when compared to opiates used in previous generations, and can be deadly in even small amounts. When firefighters encounter a potential synthetic opioid, they must be ready to administer immediate emergency treatments to patients and take appropriate measures to protect themselves, other first responders, and the public.
The lesson introduces these concepts in preparation for a hands-on drill.
