The wildland-urban interface area is best described as the zone where human-made improvements intermix with wildland fuels. The growth of urban America has placed both the wildland and structural firefighter in a dangerous position: fighting fires outside their “normal” areas of expertise. The wildland firefighter may be called to conduct structural operations, while the structural firefighter may encounter wildfire conditions interspersed in the structural setting. This reversal of roles can be deadly to the unprepared.
